| Match Report. - Falmouth Ladies v Redruth Ladies, ‘Channel 4 pitch’, Sunday 1st June 2008
Milestone game for Reds ….
On a hot, sunny and humid afternoon, Redruth Ladies travelled to Falmouth to play their second league game of the season. Falmouth won the toss and elected to bat, so Redruth were put into field on what was probably the hottest weather the ladies had yet played in … very different from last seasons cold, grey wet weather.
Redruth opened the bowling with Becky Kennedy and Suzi Brown, however with the experienced opening bats of Sue Leathy and M Ford in, the Falmouth wickets remained in tact, despite some very tight bowling from Becky (0-15 off 5 overs). Suzi bowling for the first time in a match bowled well, however found the undulating run up from the ‘Asda’ end difficult to contend with, as did subsequent Redruth seam bowlers. Eventually M Ford’s wicket fell in the 18th over, bowled by Sarah Stevens, then in the 21st over, debutant team member Lisa Kevern bagged her first scalp (M Angove) with a superb catch behind by wicket keeper Nikki Kelman, then, in the 25th wicket, Lisa stuck again, this time bowling A Rice. Notable other ‘firsts’ go to Jo Jobson, Gemma Richards and Alicia Martin for their debutant bowling efforts – and well done to all RCC Ladies. Falmouth finished their innings 212-3.
In reply and chasing a high first innings total, Redruth Captain took the decision that Redruth ladies would not go ‘all out’ to chase the total, but rather, would use the time in the middle to gain all important experience. Opening with a Suzi Brown and Judith Coughtrie combination, the innings got off to a good start (averaging 3 an over), before Judith was bowled by former Redruth player Louise Strick, who was bowling extremely well from the hospital end. Next in at the crease was Jo Jobson, who on this occasion spent a relatively short time at the crease and was followed by Nikki Kelman, who batted superbly well making 30 runs before losing her wicket to a run out. Although not gaining many runs herself, Becky Kennedy provided a supportive role at the crease and captain Sarah Stevens going in at number 7 managed 2 not out. Redruth finished their innings 102-5.
Captain, Manager (Paul Hancock), Players and Spectators were all delighted with the team and individual achievements attained during the match, not least, the fact that Redruth batted a complete innings without losing all their wickets, reached a total of over 100 (which has not been achieved previously either during their debutant season of 2007) and an individual bat scoring 30!
Well done to all, our commitment and effort are starting to pay dividends and a big thank you to Matt and Mark Richards for sharing score book duties, it is much appreciated.
