30th August 2010 - Praze 2 v Redruth

Reds ease past understrength Praze team to gain Promotion and the League!

Redruth Thirds have gained promotion to Divison 5 and they will also go up as Champions. This was after they thrashed Praze by 9 wickets to give them 20 points which means it is impossible for second placed Goldsithney to catch them. Matt Richards and Liam Eslick both took 3 wickets, bowling Praze out for 103. In reply it was Oli Bryant who lead the way with an unbeaten 46. He was well supported by brother Jake Bryant who was also unbeaten on 26 as Redruth came home with 26 overs remaining.

With both teams wanting to bat or bowl first, there was no need for a toss and so Praze went into bat with the Reds looking to make light work out of a young and inexperienced Praze side. After a few nervous opening overs from the Praze openers, it was Dan Eathorne to fall first when he was bowled by Oli Bryant for just 3. Redruth were now just 1 wicket from promotion, and they did not have to wait much longer as Matt Richards replaced John Rogers from the Old Railway end and took a wicket in his first over with Rob Thomas taking an easy catch at short leg to send the Reds up! Ahren Warwick followed soon after when he too was caught and bowled by Richards for another duck.

From here onwards wickets fell quickly and steadily thanks to a comical run out and Liam Eslick who took two further wickets as Praze were reduced to 40-7. However, there were two partnerships which gave Praze a fighting chance. Top scorer was David Pimlott with 33 and he was well supported by the young Ben Tunnicliffe who batted sensibly for his 10 and Patrick Robins who was not out on 11. Praze were eventually bowled out for 103 thanks to a sharp run out from Rob Thomas just when it looked as though Praze would bat out the overs.

After a delicious tea break, Redruth went out to bat confident that they could knock off the runs. Liam Eslick and Oli Bryant opened the batting and began to dish out some punishment to the Praze bowling with both batsmen finding the boundary ropes 3 times each. After hitting a full toss to the boundary, Liam Eslick hit the very next ball (which was also a full toss) to the fielder who he just missed the ball before who took a safe catch. Eslick departed for 13, his second in 2 innings. Jake Bryant replaced Eslick and started off solidly as he tried to get his eye in but Oli Bryant was already in and was now dismissing the bowlers over the ropes hitting 2 massive sixes. He and brother Jake managed to steer Redruth home in the 24th over to complete a 9 wicket win and to become Champions of Division 6 West!

Now that Redruth have gained promotion, they can afford to relax in their game at home to St Ives on Saturday before their County Final the week after in Helston. To celebrate, the players will be wearing rather unusual clothes for a bit of fun! The game starts at 1.30 at Clijah with presentations being held at Trewirgie after the game.
